Seed Arts and Craft Project
We are starting all of our garden plants this week. We have our vegetables and flowers starting to grow in small cups. All month we have been talking about plants and seed art projects: how they grow; how they are pollinated. But today we are doing a craft project around our garden. Literally!
Pot Head craft project:
We started by growing our plants in seven ounce plastic cups. (A few weeks ago I recommended you start seeds in seven ounce cups for an upcoming project. Well, this is it.) We planted vegetables in some, and others with just grass seeds. The ones containing just grass are so the little artist can cut the hair/grass when ready.
We used Miracle-Gro Seed starting potting mix. They advertised that it makes seeds grow faster. I didn’t think it was going to make that much of a difference, but I was wrong. It made a huge difference! Our seeds were sprouting about a week after we planted them, a week or two ahead of schedule. I was shocked. This is great for children, because it does grow fairly quickly.
For the next step we took our time and made six wraps, working on one or two a day, over the course of a week. This is perfect, because you can plant your seed on the first day and by the end of the week your seeds should be starting to sprout. Feel free to decorate your wraps however your little artist chooses. Make as many or few as you would like. We used stickers, paint, and markers. As you can see, we got creative and made all six together.
We glued the wraps onto new clean plastic cups, then slid the cups with the plant inside into the newly wrapped cup.
This would make a great Mother’s Day project. Plant flowers in cups. (We planted Forget-Me-Not flowers, but they weren’t over the tops of these cups at the time of these pictures.)
