Independence Day Arts and Crafts

We are continuing our preparation for Independence Day this week. Last week we worked on decorating our home; today we are focusing on some decorations we can wear.

Independence Day Headband

4th of July Craft ProjectYou can have a lot of fun decorating this headband, adding as many or as few pipe cleaners as you would like. We cut ours in half and made zig zags. You can leave them long if you want tall stars.

We used the fun felt stickers on this project as well. (Find them here.) I hope you are having as much fun with these stickers as we are. Let your little artists decorate the blue strip of paper however they choose with the felt stars; then help them attach the pipe cleaners to the headband.

Uncle Sam’s Hat

4th of July Caft ProjectThis fun wearable project combines coloring, cutting, and gluing. It should be easy for most kids, although it could be a bit of a challenge for smaller artists to cut out. It was designed to begin to teach how to cut curves.

Have your artists decorate their hats in red, white, and blue colors. You may use crayons, markers, or even paint. When they have completed the decorating, have them cut out their hats.

If you choose to make this project wearable, you will need construction paper. Cut out a strip long enough to fit around the child’s head. Have the child glue the hat onto the strip of paper and wear.

Fireworks

4th of July craft projectEven though this art project is not wearable, what would Independence Day be without fireworks? This project teaches your little artist to paint with his or her breath. Place paint drops onto a piece of paper; then use a drinking straw to blow the paint over the paper, making fireworks.

I guess you could make this a wearable project by using the aforementioned painting technique on a t-shirt. Whichever medium you choose, make sure to protect your work surface. Lay down newspaper or use a box. It’s bound to get messy! But the memories are where the messes live.

We hope you have a fun and creative Independence Day, because “You’re so creative!”
