Fun National Cookie Cutter Week Projects for Kids

The first week of December is National Cookie Cutter Week in the United States. There are so many different kinds of cookie cutters out there. They come in every shape and size, and for every holiday. We love this all-in-one 101 Cookie cutter set. It’s a great starter set with letters, numbers, and miscellaneous cutters. It’s a great way to sneak in letter and number recognition skills, too.

We are in full cookie making mode this time of year, baking trays of cookies for each of our neighbors and friends. We are sharing one of our favorite cookie recipes to make with kids, as it does not have eggs. We all know what that means… a kind of edible cookie dough. Yum! (If you are worried about eating raw flour, simply microwave it for 30 seconds before mixing it in.) This recipe also does not rise very much. Your little artist can sculpt with this dough like play dough, and bake. We hope you have as much fun with this as we do.

Cookie Dough

  1. Preheated oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Large bowl
  3. Spoon or Mixer
  4. 1 cup soft butter
  5. 1/2 cup sugar
  6. 1 Tablespoon milk
  7. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  8. 2 1/4 cups of flour
  9. Rolling pin
  10. Cookie cutters

Directions:

  1. Mix all ingredients in a bowl until well mixed.
  2. Begin sculpting or rolling out.
  3. When done, bake at 325 degrees F. for 12-15 minutes.

While the cookies are baking, we can make a little art. In this project, we are using cookie cutters like giant stamps. You can stamp and decorate however you choose. This is a great chance to use any scrap art supplies lying around. Bits of paper or yarn are perfect.

In case you don’t have access to an oven to bake cookies, in our next project, we use oatmeal, chocolate chips, or maybe sprinkles to decorate pretend cookies.

Pretend Cookies

  2. Sprinkles
  3. Mini chocolate chips
  4. Oatmeal
  5. Glue

Directions:

  1. Print off cookie pattern.
  2. Glue the chocolate chips and oatmeal to cookies.

Cookie Cutter Art

You can use a collection of cookie cutters to trace around and create a fun scene.

Supplies:

  1. Cookie cutters
  2. Pencil
  3. Paper

Directions:

  1. Trace around the cookie cutters to make a picture.

We hope you have fun this week with cookie cutters and cookies. Whatever you make this week, we know you will tell your little artist, “You’re so creative!”
