Mexican Independence Day Crafts
September 16, 1810, marks the day Mexico declared its independence from Spain. Making Mexican Independence day September 16th not May 5th like many believe. This is a great opportunity to learn about the history and culture of this beautiful country. In our first craft, we are learning about one of the cultures, the Mayans. The Mayans are still a thriving part of Mexico. They are working on preserving the language through outreach and education. Did you know the Mayan word for money is chicken?

Your little artist is sure to recognize this next craft. It is popcorn! This tasty treat goes so well with watching movies. The great people of Mexico have been making and eating this snack for over 10,000 years. In this craft, we are using real popcorn kernels to decorate.
Popcorn Craft
Did you know you can cook popcorn in the microwave without butter? This is a fun project to do with the children. It is popcorn on the cob. Simply place the whole cob in a paper bag and cook as instructed. We have had lots of fun with this over the years.
We hope you had fun celebrating the real Mexican Independence Day with these crafts. I know you are sure to say, “Eres tan creativa!’
