Hawaiian Crafts
Yesterday, August 21st we celebrated the anniversary of Hawaii becoming a part of the United States. To celebrate we decided to make and share some fun Hawaiian crafts to celebrate.
Here are some fun facts to share with your little artist while working on our crafts.
- Hawaii is the only state outside of North America
- The only state made up entirely of islands
- The only state in the tropics.
Let’s say a warm Aloha to our first project, the Hawaiian lei. When you arrive on most of the islands you are greeted with warm sea breezes and a lei. Little artists have fun making paper chains and gluing on flowers. I always have extra supplies on hand for making extra lies. This also makes beautiful vines to decorate the room.

We have the lie now it is time to make the matching headdress. Traditionally called the Haku Lie it is worn for special occasions and events. Let’s get your little artist ready for their special event by making their own.

Next, let’s make a craft about the food we might eat if we were visiting the island of Hawaii. A trip to any tropical island would not be complete with a coconut. Little artists will refine small motor skills by ripping and gluing a husk onto this coconut.

If you have any little artist you probably have seen the movie Moana, maybe more than once. This next craft is then sure to recognizable, Maui’s hook. This hook not only represents Maui but was a symbol of prosperity. If one had a fish hook they would always be able to provide for one’s family.
In this craft, we are making stamps out of pieces of celery. Adding a new process for little artists to use. Click the image to print your own hook.

It would not be a trip to Hawaii without seeing a Hawaiian shirt. Little artists can color this shirt any way they choose. When done add beautiful bright stickers to complete.
