Free Exoskeleton Ocean Crafts for Children

Exoskeleton Ocean Crafts

We are learning a lot with today’s exoskeleton ocean crafts. Little artists will learn that an animal with an exoskeleton has a hard covering that supports and protects the body. The word exoskeleton means ‘outside skeleton.’ Today we are making and designing our own exoskeleton ocean animals.

This first craft is always a favorite with our little artists. They love to mix art with engineering in this coral craft. Children are shocked to learn that coral is made up of hundreds of thousands of tiny exoskeleton animals. This process art project will sure they come out as unique as the artist who designs it. We hope this next project doesn’t make anyone ‘crabby.’ All dad jokes aside we are having fun assembling our own crab. We precut the pieces for the littlest artists while older students may be able to cut out and assemble them on their own. Click the link for the pattern and more.

This next craft is perfect to learn about exoskeletons. This art lobster’s shell is hard just like the real thing. We used the trick of printing the parts onto red paper. This helps save time and helps make the project easier. Click the image below to find out how we made this up-cycle craft.

We are having fun with the horse of a different color in this final craft. Ah, well, a seahorse that is. The seahorse can be yellow, orange, pink, or gray. But real ones may change their colors to help camouflage. We not only learn that the seahorse has an exoskeleton but we learn how to cut and make a spiral. Real seahorses use their tail to swim and hold onto coral and plants. Click the image to find out more.
