Chinese New Year Crafts

Another year has come and passed. Now it is time to celebrate Chinese New Year. This year Chinese New Year will begin on 12 February. The reason the new year falls at this time is because it marks the start of the lunar new year, which is when there is a start of a new moon. This is different from the ‘Gregorian’ calendar that we traditionally use, which always starts on 1 January. We celebrate this holiday like many others, with Chinese New Year Crafts. Let’s gather our art supplies and begin.

The Chinese zodiac uses twelve animals. Each has its own meaning and symbolism. In the year 2022, we celebrate the year of the tiger. It is believed people born in the year of the tiger will be great leaders. Let us have some fun refining motor skills while making our own tiger. Click the image below to make this free project.

To celebrate Chinese New Year you might see a parade featuring the mythical dragon. The dancers wear a large dragon puppet costume and perform a choreographed puppet show. The dragon is considered a good luck symbol. The longer the dance the more luck it will bring.

In this next project, we are making our own dragon puppet. For the smallest artists, we help by cutting out the pieces. The older artist may cut out his or her own pieces and assemble them. To make this dragon puppet click the image below.

Maybe your little artist would like to become their own dragon and perform a dance? In our final project, we are making our own dragon headdress. I love showing the children videos of professional dragon dancers and then letting them make up their own. But first, we have to make our own costumes.
