With parts of the world celebrating summer, we think it’s a good time to throw a luau.
For those of you just learning about this…. A luau is a traditional Hawaiian party or feast. It is a celebration with food, music, and the hula dance. If you ever get the chance to travel to the Hawaiian Islands, I highly recommend you never miss a chance to go to a luau.
But if you can’t make it to the Hawaiian Islands, you can make crafts with your little artist that will help make you feel like you are there.
The first item you will receive at a luau is a lei, (pronounced ‘lay’.) The lei is a flower necklace that everyone wears. In our first project your little artists can make their own leis, or make one for everyone at their parties.
This project also makes a great party decoration. Simply make extra long chains to hang around the room.
Lei Craft Project
Supplies:
- Copy of flowers
- Construction paper
- Scissors
- Glue stick
Directions:
- Print out flowers onto construction paper and cut out.
- Cut strips of green paper.
- Teach your little artist how to make a paper chain. Glue the ends to make a loop. Add another through the circle, and glue the ends together. Make as long as you’d like.
- Glue flowers onto paper chain.
- Wear.
A traditional food that might be served at your luau is lau lau. It is a meat that is seasoned with butterfish and wrapped in taro leaves and cooked. We decided it was easier to craft our lau lau than trying to make it ourselves.
